The captured humans were terrified, rightly so, at being dumped in a dark pit after being yanked from their dimension by warrior youma. The only thing that had actually happened yet was being pricked in the side by an inhuman monster for some strange alien medical purpose.
As time passed, no food or water were thrown down. The humans cried and begged upward where there was just a glow of light from the fungi on the walls, only to be ignored. The lucky ones succumbed to infection from the stings, to dehydration, to exposure to the chill and damp of the caverns.
The unlucky ones were still alive when the stomach cramps started until the time the larva, so white they shone in the pale light, like maggots, and as long and thick as a forearm from wrist to elbow, ate their way out and kept eating.
“Mommy, Mommy,” they called.
“Fly up here, my dears,” the grown wasp called.
The young youma cocooned themselves in Queen Metallia’s dark power and grew gossamer, chitinous wings to fly to their mother.
