Watching [livejournal.com profile] seawasp go through the thirty days has finally made me cave in and go through my own list. (Why is this on this journal, probably the worst one for it? I don't know.)

First anime falls into the complicated problem of defining that, naturally. For instance, I wouldn't count Power Rangers even if it weren't live-action because it's so much new footage/plot from Super Sentai.

First anime I didn't know was anime: Pokemon. I was really into Pokemon in the later half of elementary school. (Yes, that tells my age pretty exactly, doesn't it?) Games, show, cards. I met the closest people I had to friends at the time through Pokemon. I wrote loads of Pokemon fanfic. I supplemented my allowance with a rather large Pokemon card business in the neighborhood.

First anime I knew was anime: Inuyasha. The first anime I was aware was from Japan was Digimon, but I found that information irrelevant other than to be used to using original and dub names interchangeably online. It would be years before I realized my Saturday morning Sailor Moon, Cardcaptors, Yu-Gi-Oh, etc. were.

The first time I was aware of anime as a genre/subculture was when watching Inuyasha, by which point I had friends who were full-fledged otaku and they had started dragging me to cons and bookstores and watching Adult Swim. I actually went something like two or three years hanging out with otaku, going to cons, cosplaying, being an officer in my school's anime club, doing various fannish things having seen, in grand total: dubbed Saturday morning cartoons (see above), Inuyasha, a few episodes of Ranma and Saint Tail and maybe Azumanga Daioh, and read maybe a volume or two of Clamp. I do very clearly remember a conversation, though, between my friends and some guy we met at a con about how Inuyasha was the entry-drug anime for our generation.

I have the odd, and irrelevant, honor of being one of the few people who was a Japanese language/culture student first (I have the excuse of my mother) and then became an otaku second. But when the otaku bug finally hit, the two weeks before I started college, it hit hard.
