Shin didn’t try to deny it, for once.
“You’re him, huh? I don’t believe you.”
He took a step towards King Endymion and spoke before he knew what was coming out of his mouth. “Master Endymion--”
“Kunzite.”
“I am what I am, not what I was.”
“What are you, then?”
“Ichiou Shin. Husband of Sakurazuka Yukio. Second-in-command of the Dark Kingdom.”
“Why aren’t you with me anymore? Is she better than me, is that it?”
“She’s not better than you. A lot worse, actually. But when she does good, it’s just… There’s no Golden Kingdom now. I am Dark Kingdom. You can’t go there, be of there, without it having a claim to you, without being changed by it.”
“I was there.”
Shin was silent for a while before he said offhandedly, “I’m a priest now, did you know?”
“Who ordained you?”
“No one. I’m just a Shinto priest. Well, more than just. I’m a dark priest, a dark paladin.”
“Do you regret it?”
“I lived.” He shrugged.
“That’s it?”
“I lived. Then I didn’t. Now I’m someone else. So I’ll live again.”
“And make mistakes again.”
“And make mistakes again. But not the same mistakes, that’s the point.”
“Are you?”
They were standing so close together King Endymion could feel Shin’s breath when he exhaled. “Master Endymion… I’ll always be here.”
He kissed Endymion tenderly on the forehead and walked away.
