Tifa couldn’t remember ever being more scared than watching Cloud, bleeding everywhere from a bullet hole, bodily disappear.

“He’s in the Lifestream again,” Vincent said behind her.

“Is he gonna get stuck again?” asked Yuffie, jumping out of the Shera. When no one answered her, she continued, “How are we going to get him back?”

“We go pray.”

“Where?”

“Where I’m sure everyone in the city is flocking: to the holy place of the healing water.”

“The church.” Vincent turned back to the airship with a swish of his cloak.

Yuffie whined. “I don’t get it.”

She was there, as Tifa had fully expected her to be. There was also a man who couldn’t be called “dark” because of his bright grin, who she recognized from Cloud’s memory.

“I’m not sure I ever expected for you to give him to me.”

“He hasn’t wanted to go back. But he will because you’ll be there. You’ll all be there. It’s the way it has to be, to balance Jenova. He has to be sent back for a mortal lifetime.”

“Don’t be mean, babe,” the man spoke finally. “Cloud is ours, always will be, but he’s yours too. He’s lived my life; now he has to live his.”

Was everyone staring at her for talking to herself? No, Barret was fighting Yuffie over stolen materia again.

“And I’m his life.”

“You were. Cloud’s not twenty-three; he’s sixteen and just ran away from Nibelheim to impress you. I was a SOLDIER First Class. I loved those I loved.”

“Will he ever…”

“He’ll never recover, not fully. But he’s him now,” the pink-clad woman smiled fondly.

Cid yelled, “There’s someone in there!”

Tifa turned to look. Deeper than any of the children were swimming, a large body was rising from the depths of the water.
