She didn’t flail and whack him in the face, so he shook her shoulder harder. “Makoto.”
Her hand flopped away from him and she mumbled incoherently.
“Wake up.”
“Wait,” she muttered. “Wait… me… Don’t go away.”
“I’m not. I’ll stay right here.” Motoki promised even though he knew she wasn’t talking to him.
“No… wait…”
“Makoto!”
“Motoki?” she asked, sounding surprised.
“You were having a nightmare,” he explained, though he doubted it needed to be.
“I seem to recall… someone saying ‘I’ll stay right here.’”
“Ah, well,” Motoki blushed, unseen in the darkness, “eh, you know, you’ve got to say these things.”
