purplekitteI can't really say if this was inspired more by Dragon and Phoenix or Dragonheart. I love both anyway.

In the days of the old kings of the Golden Millennium, it was the custom that the prince must go out and slay a dragon and he would become king of the middle kingdom.
And this continued for many years until there was only one dragon left. And the prince was a lazy and cowardly man, so he sent in his place to kill the dragon his half-brother by a mere foreign concubine.
The boy’s name was Endymion and he went to the cave where the dragon lived. And as he went to kill the dragon, it said, “Wait!”
Now as Endymion had been trained to follow orders all his life, he stopped. And the dragon told him, “I am the last dragon. If you kill me, there will be no more dragons and no more kinds. But if you make me, not my corpse, the foundation for your rule, I will make you king of all the Earth.”
The boy returned with the dragon as his counselor at the eve of the Silver Millennium and became King Endymion I of the Golden Kingdom.
