“Hey Umino-kun!” How could Usagi not spent time with someone for a year and run over to them in the hall like they had hung out yesterday?
“Hey…” Tsukino? Usagi? Eh, he could stay and chat; he was early for robotics.
“It’s so weird to see you without Naru-chan. You two are practically joined at the--Hey, Minako-chan, that’s my lunch!” She darted off, pigtails flying far behind her.
Weird. She has all those new friends. Naru mentioned that last we talked, I think. Man, that was a while ago. Tuesday was robotics club so for her that would be… cheerleading, unless her schedule had changed. No reason not to blow off robotics or be late, most people wouldn’t be in and he’d just be fooling around on the computers.
Walking out where the cheerleaders practiced, he heard whispers of “Osaka-chan’s boyfriend”. This followed that someone alerted Naru to his presence, at least. She was flushed from her warm-ups and breathing a little quickly. She looked… not flustered but busy, always busy, like he always seemed to be.
“Why does everyone think we’re still dating?” he said suddenly. It occurred to him he didn’t recall when they’d broken up, but it just seemed so obvious, it must have been months and months ago.
She looked confused rather than surprised. “I can’t imagine. I’ve hardly seen you since we started high school.”
Now Umino felt bad.
“It’s not your fault,” she must have read from his face. “We have different friends now. I’d be too busy to do anything. Well, not true. I was going to go over to the Crown Arcade today, but I haven’t been there in years.”
“Have fun. I’ll be at cram school,” he added quickly in case there was an invitation there.
“Yeah. You look after yourself too,” she said before going back to finding a baton.
