They were not nice people. Diamond couldn’t believe he hadn’t seen this sooner, really understood what is meant. Maybe it was just that he had never had anywhere other than Nemesis to compare it with.
Being pardoned by Neo-Queen Serenity would not make them into good people. Maybe once he might have believed that if they were no longer treated like criminals they would not act like them.
But that was an opportunity a thousand years long past. The Black Crystal might cloud the minds of a few weak in magic for a while but anyone with any real good in them could break its spell, like Black Lady or Calaveras or Sapphire.
Sapphire… His whole life was a mess from trying to protect his younger brother and his brother trying to protect him.
But the rest, the cousins, they had never even wanted to fight the Death Phantom. They were evil. They were products of generations of hatred and intrigue, a thousand years on sunless Nemesis.
Nemesis had produced one exception. It hadn’t a second in Prince Diamond. He just hoped he wouldn’t fail to protect Serenity like he had failed his brother.
