“It’s always bad news out of Tokyo,” her father said as his early morning mantra over his newspaper.

“Yes, your company moving us to Sapporo was a godsent, even with the weather.”

“Keeps the monsters out. The army has them stalled in the north but there are more attacks further south each day.”

“And that poor Sailor V is only a little girl, isn’t she?”

“She had help for a while, other super soldiers in short skirts, but they died before the monsters really started to advance. It was in the paper a long time ago.”

Makoto ran down stairs in a whirlwind. “I’m late! Gotta go!” She stuffed a piece of toast halfway in her mouth and ran out the door, shoes half-on.

“Wait! Your lunch,” her mother called after her.

Her tall daughter ran back close enough to reach the box in her hand. “Bye Mom. Thank you. Gotta go!”
