Was someone following her? No. No, what was she thinking? This was Tokyo, land of the low crime rate, not New York. It wasn’t even a neighborhood like Roppongi or Shinjuku where a woman might think about walking alone at night. It was all her imagination.
Was she sure? Was that silhouette familiar? She could hear her footsteps now that there were fewer people around. Were those other treads getting closer? Were they speeding up as hers were?
No way she was getting stuck at a dead end in any alley but the walls were getting narrower. Why had she had to wear such high heels today?
She glanced over her shoulder. A woman. She relaxed a little. Just a woman, probably out on the town if not lost. Her clothes were a little skanky she could see in the dark, so maybe a clubber or a prostitute.
She walked straight into a man with long pale hair. She shook herself off to apologize but he held her in place with surprising strength.
“Is this the one you were herding, Shakoukai?”
Was this a yakuza who was going to rape her or kidnap her? Her parents didn’t have that much money to be worth ransoming her.
The woman stepped closer and became visible in the moonlight. She screamed under the hand that quickly closed over her mouth. That thing wasn’t human!
