“But getting married’s such a big step.”
“We have been dating for more than four years, Mama. It’s not like we’re jumping into it.”
“But you’re so young.” Technically true but the old words no longer seemed fitting. Her daughter had changed while she hadn’t been looking from an empty-headed teenager to a regal and commanding woman. What could have caused such a change in maturity in someone who should have still been a young girl? “What’s the rush?”
“I’ve graduated high school and Mamo-chan’s back from America and working at the hospital.”
“That’s no reason.”
“We don’t know the details but we estimate…” She fingered her broche. “No, never mind. You know Mamoru and I have been keeping company together…”
“Are you pregnant?”
“I think I am. Don’t fret. We’ll be married and he’s older and has a respectable job and I do well enough as a secretary for now. We want this.”
“I was never expecting grandchildren so soon.” Ikuko teared up.
“Are you upset with me?” asked Usagi.
“No, no. You’ve grown up so quickly it sometimes feels like you’re a different person.”
Usagi hugged her and said strangely, “I’m still me and you’re still my real mother.”
