The little girl cried in the dark. No, not little girl, beautiful woman, beautiful majestic queen of a fairytale castle and many servants. All this she built for herself so she wouldn’t have to cry, the golden lady said.
When she did cry, the sound echoed in the emptiness of the ethereal world and across time and space.
“Hello,” rang a silver voice, clear as a bell.
The little girl attired herself in gowns and bangles and a cold wintry beauty, hair dark as jet and cat-like eyes of pale amber. “Who are you to greet your queen as such?”
“I am also a queen,” said the woman, pale and simple in hair, eye, skin, and dress. Her stark whiteness was stunningly bright against the swirling of imagination and darkness.
“The gold lady said she would make me the queen over this entire world.”
“I am not of this world. I only exist here as a dream of my daughter’s.”
The queen didn’t much like the idea. “No one can be here unless I want them to! It’s mine! I am Queen Nehelenia and only what I dream is real!”
“And still I am.”
“Then I must have wanted you for something…” She couldn’t remember who, what she had been before she’d met the gold lady and become queen. “Are you my Mommy?”
“I can be, dear.” The silver lady with the moon on her brow picked up the little girl, a little girl again, and dried her tears. “I can be.”
“I’ll pretend.”
