The high priestess and oracle of the Shinto/Buddhist temple deep in the wilds of Yamato looked down on the prince from painted eyes in her china face. “Speak, Prince of Earth.”
“My dharma is that I must fight at the head of my kingdom’s army, against the Lunarians. If Serenity is to be my wife, I must do my duty by her and our dharma is one. I have turned to the path of the Buddha and ahimsa, the non-violence. How may I too stop this suffering that the demons have brought upon us? How should I fulfill the dharmic laws then, to end their desire for this world and their suffering? If I take the path of violence, only more violence will follow.”
She stood, in the raiment not of a shrine maiden or the saffron robes of a nun but the burning red of Sailor Mars, priestess of war. And what she said would eventually be rendered in an epic poem, Why War, of such great beauty as to put the Bhagavad Gita to shame, that would make grown men weep to hear.
What Sailor Mars said to the Prince of Earth at the time was, “Stop bawling and fight, idiot.” It grew somewhat in the telling.
