Yes, today is the posting of the slight backlog I accumulated while concentrating on my NaNo. This is actually the first thing I wrote early in the morning on November 1, not being part of my NaNo story at all. I hadn't even reread Clan of the Cave Bear or Guns, Germs, and Steel recently at that time.

Why had she ended up with this tribe? Perhaps that they were a collection of strays and not related by blood, so took her in without reservation. Perhaps she was just nostalgic… interested in the young blonde girl who had much older people following her as chief and had to all indications founded the settlement.

They lived on a cliff, up and down the goat trails and shallow caves and did their hunting and gathering at the lands above. In the canyon below there was another tribe, which seemed to be led by Ura’s mother, but they did not trade with them, though were not quite enemies.

It was there Setsuna realized that Ura, and by extension these modern people, wasn’t stupid; she just didn’t know grammar. The senshi who was already older than anyone alive’s great-grandmother realized this suddenly one day. Ura had a prized possession, what Setsuna recognized as a makeup kit from the fallen Silver Millennium. She started laughing and couldn’t stop to see the girl in animal skins washing out her long blonde hair with shampoo.

Despite Ura’s acknowledgement of “Set’na priestess,” a word the chief put a lot of respect and awe into, Setsuna knew the most useful thing she could have taught them was how to use rocks to make sharper rocks.

“If you put all the seeds in the same place, plants will grow there next year.”

“If you capture baby animals and feed them, they’ll be tame.”

“Hey Ura, over here.” She had finally found forty-five apples in their stores. For future lessons she was going to have to turn to rocks. “These marks in the dirt mean something. This is ‘1’.” She put down one apple. “This is ‘2’…”

I doubt it, because I have no plot and I have unfortunately reread Jared Diamond since then so it would probably descend into tedious anthropology. But I'm glad the world was interesting enough for someone to want to see more of it and I'll keep it in mind.
