The mask was Minako’s idea. In her defense, there was more than a mask there too, the bleaching of her hair to pale gold and the blue, red, and pink sailor suit not often seen on schoolgirls in England. But her face was her own and she thought a red piece of plastic over her cheekbones and forehead would make all the difference. She was only twelve, it should be remembered.
The tabloids were quick enough to jump on it. But articles linking Sailor V with idol Aino Minako were given little attention when squeezed between articles about alien abductions into mysterious black crystal UFOs and ones of talking cats at the scene.
What the mask did serve for was to keep the other senshi from knowing her for who she truly was. She took it off, declared herself princess, and hid more with the lies of her life than she ever had of the area around her eyes.
