Despite some expectations about fiery Mars to the contrary, Rei did not hate water. In and of itself. She hated the cold.
She hated ice. She hated the bucket of water, frigid in winter and just lukewarm in summer, that she poured over her head every morning. She did it anyway, to not be weak and soft and give in to the demands of her body.
She loved the water of her shower, for as much time as she let herself indulge in it. She loved her rare trips out of Tokyo, where she always managed a side trip to the hot springs. She would sit in the water till the old ladies dragged her out, afraid she was going to boil and die.
She would sneak back in later. It was hard to explain that the heat of water could no more hurt her than the heat of her own fire.
