It might sound rude but it was undoubtedly for the best that Rei read the announcement in the newspaper. Calling him up to rip his head off would indicate far too much that she cared, that she followed his career avidly, which wasn’t true.
He had chosen the scandal of his daughter’s absence over her making a scene, unless he meant to spring an invitation-by-goon-kidnapping on her at the last minute. She would rather avoid it entirely than go out of her way to actively hurt his reputation. She made a note to herself to be impossible to find that whole week.
None of her business. Rei had long since mentally divorced her late, sainted mother from her neglectful husband. It could be any skeevy politician, announcing his engagement to a trophy wife with hennaed hair who he had twenty years on, for all she cared.
She wondered idly if there would one day be half-siblings sent away to her grandfather’s shrine, but no, he wouldn’t make that mistake again.
