It said a lot about Yui’s personality that the only one she was angry with was herself.
She hid behind her favorite rock, not crying. She was not crying and not going to cry and certainly not going to let anyone see it if she did. Unfortunately, it was one of the ones Vivian knew.
“I didn’t ever want Rei-san to do something like that.”
“Okaasan was just angry, like she gets sometimes. But everything she said was true.”
“Yu—”
“Vivian-san should be the next head priestess. This one would never have been any good for it.”
“At least call me ‘Oneesan’, Yui-chan.”
This one would just make a worse mess of things than she usually does. This one is better off sweeping floors. Yui realized Vivian was staring at her and that she had frozen up and that some kind of answer was required. It’s been obvious since she first came to the temple that Vivian-san would be perfect as the next head priestess. Everyone knows it. Okaasan just made it official. “This one never wanted to be head priestess.” Yui managed to speed through at her usual whisper-volume.
Vivian thought, That’s Rei-san, too quick to loose her temper and say things in too cruel a manner and too proud to apologize. And Yui-chan, too timid and willing to believe everything’s her fault. She said, “I think you’re missing the basic point here…” but quietly enough that Yui could not answer, which she didn’t. Vivian didn’t put an arm around her and Yui didn’t want her to.
