I was most of the way through this before I stopped and looked up in the airport and thought--hey, wait a second, why is Vivianite at the doctor's office with Rei? Sure, she's her protege, but Rei already has Yuuichirou, wouldn't she have left Vivian in charge of the shrine while she was gone? I never thought up a good answer to that. Oh well.

Title: And Don't Talk to Anyone

Theme: Post-series--Menopause
Genre: Drama
Version: Anime
Rating: PG

Vivianite was willing to acknowledge that she hadn’t really appreciate all Yui did. It was worse than Aunt Kouan, she would swear.

Anything not quick, easy, convenient, and perfect would meet with immediate, generally loud disapproval from Rei-san. It must have been unbearable to Yui, who Vivian was perfectly aware was embarrassed by everything, let alone complaining in public.

It took Vivian a while to realize Rei-san and Yuuichirou were completely lost. Something was missing. A priestess was trained to notice every detail, even if she didn’t analyze it at the time. A tiny “This way” or even just walking in a direction, everyone would follow Yui. Yui would already have talked to any service counter before anyone else got there. She was extremely fast and must have been incredibly strong. She had carried everything and still run ahead and around every time and she had been a slip of a girl; one of Rei-san’s bags probably weighed more than she. She must have been remarkably competent too.

But Rei-san’s only daughter was gone, with Vivian’s younger sister, and Rei-san was standing at the doctor’s counter, commenting loudly enough to be heard from orbit that if the doctor couldn’t see them today they could just tell us, we can just drop everything and come here tomorrow. Not that Vivian made a real effort to be inconspicuous herself; her hair was blue and she was only lucky everyone thought it was dye or she’d have to give in to dying it black. But, she assuredly was relieved when an assistant opened the door to call them back.

The back room was just another waiting room and Rei-san was steaming angry by the time the doctor came in. Literally. She stalked past as the doctor walked in, with Yuuichirou scurrying in two, announcing she was too hot. The doctor blinked at Vivian in confusion. She hoped he didn’t notice the smoke.

“Does Kumada-san complain of that often?”

“Yeah?”

“And the aggression and irritability and mood swings?”

“Yes?”

“Has she been sleeping?”

“Not recently.”

The doctor paused thoughtfully. “I’ll ask Kumada-san for blood work when she returns to get a hormonal reading. Your mother may be going through menopause.”

Vivian wasn’t even sure where to start. I’m not the daughter or Sensei’s always been like this. “She’s only thirty-four.”
