“Why do you ask, Hotaru?”
“Well, you didn’t emerge full-formed from a seashell and Haruka-papa didn’t from a car engine.”
“Oh yeah, that’s how we explained it when you were little. Wait, what about Setsuna springing from the gates of time?”
“That I could believe.”
Michiru laughed. “I wondered… with this field trip to the nursing home, but I thought when you were older… No, come on, let’s go.”
“But Mama, aren’t you supposed to be chaperoning the whole class?”
“They’ll never notice we were gone.”
She led Hotaru away from her teacher and class and down identically furnished hallways.
“Why is that lady covered in tubes?”
“They’re helping her breathe.”
“Oh. She needs help?”
“Yes. She has for a long time.”
“Are we going to wake her up?” Hotaru asked worriedly.
“That’s… not likely.”
“Why not?”
“She’s been sleeping a long time. This is your grandmother, Hotaru.”
