Keiko was not unaccustomed to staying up late. She got dozens of invitations to parties every week. But that was the point, she was a part animal, not a night owl. And certainly not one to be buried over a pile of books, with the lights on her desk painfully bright in contrast to the darkness everywhere else.
Her neck ached, her bottom was sore, her eyes burned, and her back hurt. Sheer brilliance can’t get you everywhere without study, she reminded herself, thought she felt she should be genius enough to do so.
Her coffee machine was broken, so she lurched around her room after loose change, then dropped some of it back to the floor because she would not be having a shot of vodka today. Her umbrella kept off the rain, but she was low on body heat by the time she sat wrapped around her frothy drink.
Then the door opened and the man of her dreams walked in. He offered her his coat. She offered him her umbrella.
