The teenager darted forward, pushing matted hair no longer distinguishable as aqua out of her face. She peeled the still bleeding squirrel off the hot tarmac with her broken fingernails, still able to taste the exhaust of the car that had run it over in the air.
She ran with her prize back under a tree. She seemed more animal than human, not just the dirt and the rags, but more the feral gleam in her eyes with no human understanding left.
She cracked the broken body open with her teeth, enjoying the splash of blood on her parched lips. She was hungry, but no, baby. Her milk had dried up days ago.
“Mi~chi~ru,” she cooed, the one bit of human speech left to her as she dripped blood into her baby’s thirsty mouth. She chewed the meat up, careful not to swallow any, to feed her, even as her stomach growled. “Mi~chi~ru.”
