The house was half empty when she came home from school.
“Mother,” little Ami said politely. “Why are all of Father’s things gone?”
“He’s gone on a long business trip, dear.”
Ami knew the truth even before she asked, though her mother wouldn’t get around to telling her till she was eleven.
Every year on the first day of school she would stand up and say her father was a businessman who was usually working in America (he was a painter). She once wrote a report about the low divorce rate in Japan and its cultural repercussions. She got an A on it, of course.
